Public bug reported:

I installed Ubuntu for a friend on a Dell desktop. When prompted at the
install I put her name in and a password. Once installed I entered this
info and it worked. Then it asked for verification and indicated the
user was Dell and asked for a password. We put in the password which was
written at the install and every other one we could think of but it
would not be accepted. I tried to change to another user account but
only the Dell account would appear. What can I do? ps now I am reluctant
to install 12.10 on my machines for fear of the same problem.

** Affects: ubuntu-meta (Ubuntu)
