Because when upgrading windows it checks(not sure how) for this. When
upgrading from 7 to sp1 I had to restore the MBR so I could complete
upgrade. When I fresh installed 12.04 I tried to create the custom /boot to
avoid issues with any future windows upgrades but ran into this error.

As an aside to avoid such issues that is default behaviour of opensuse.

Title:
Installing grub to MBR interferes with Windows 7 upgrades

Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts:
  Invalid
Status in “grub-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
If you manually parition your hard drive on a dual boot computer in a
  manner such as

  /dev/sda1 - windows files(os)
  /dev/sda2 - windows
  /dev/sda3 - windows
  /dev/sda4 extended partition
  /dev/sda5 linux swap
  /dev/sda6 ext4 /boot
  /dev/sda6 ext4 /
  /dev/sda7 ext4 /home

The you install ubuntu and choose to install grub to /boot rather than
sda (MBR) the ubuntu install fails to find grub and boot after the
  installation completes.
