Title:
allow the user to choose from upgrade alternatives

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
If I am being forced to use do-release-upgrade to have a supported
update from one release to the next then the program should allow me
more influence over what packages are kept installed, upgraded and
removed. Right now, the program resolves all the dependencies and
presents one and only one solution. The only thing I can do is to
accept it or abort the update entirely. This could and should be
improved. Aptitude for example allows to cycle through alternative
  resolutions of the dependencies.
