@Carla: this is beause the Hibernate has been disabled by default! It
doesn't work well on many systems including mine (though it used to work
on 10.04 for a while). You will have to enable it on your own after you
make sure it works on ur system.

My current system (12.04) failed to hibernate (though I allocated 16GB
swap) :(

I was testing my laptop: https://friendly.ubuntu.com/11.10/Hewlett-Packard/HP%20G62%20Notebook%20PC/I:NyVHp:BI:I8g:BVL:BFCp:h:B5G:DNO:BFC/ and carrying out testcase: http://testcases.qa.ubuntu.com/System/SuspendResume - Hibernate/Resume smoke test (to be done on installed systems only, not live environments) - Case ID: snr-003.
I have Precise Pangolin Beta 2 installed on my laptop.
As you can see from the two images attached there is no hibernate selection to carry out the test.
