Public bug reported:
I dopwnloaded the "alternate" install (12.04.1) in the hopes that this,
at least, would allow me to get Ubuntu installed.
The process seemed to be going along fine, but now, for the part 30+
minutes, it has been hung (no disk activity and no activity of any kind
from the machine).
The message on the screen is:
Configuring libcwidget3
and there is a progress bar which is hung at 3% completion.
Hardware in the system for this (attempted) install is:
AMD Athlon 64 model 1640B cpu
MSI K9VGM-V motherboard
2GB ram
40GB Seagate IDE/PATA drive
Lite-On SOHW-1673S CD/DVD burner
LG GH22NS50 CD/DVD burner
ATI X600 graphics card
That's it. There is nothing else in the system... no other cards or
anything.
See also this bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ubiquity/+bug/1060525
which I also filed today, when I could not even just simple _run_ the OS
from the Live CD.
It seems that there is simply no way to EITHER run or install Ubuntu
successfully at this point in time.
How exactly am I supposed to get past the above error so that I can
continue with the install? I've tried everything I can think of...
Cntl-C, Cntl-Alt-Del, f2, Alt-F2, Cntl-Alt-F2, Shift-F2, Shift-Alt-F2,
Cntl-Shift-Alt-F2, ESC, Cntl-Alt-Backspace... NONTHING works to break me
out of this. How come? Did none of you guys ever consider the
possibility that something like this could happen, necessitating an
emergency escape hatch?
If so, that was rather bad planning, wasn't it?
Please excuse me for being so direct and pointed, but does anybody ever
test this stuff, you know, before it gets released?
>From where I am sitting, it would appear not.
My hardware is not so out-of-the-ordinary as to explain why installing
the OS here would choke, and yet run perfectly everyplace else in the
Universe.
** Affects: ubiquity (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
