I don't know if it's still an issue, I reported this three and a half
years ago and I stopped using Ubuntu a few years after I reported it (I
left precisely because issues like this went un-addressed for years even
though they were fixed in upstream).

However, if you look at the two fixed Debian bugs in my comment above,
which this bug duplicates, you will find that it would be trivial to
check the package and see if those bugs are still fixed in Ubuntu's
package, all you have to do is look inside the package and see if the
fontforge.desktop and fontforge.xml files are being properly included in
the package and properly installed.

  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: fontforge

  Fontforge saves its internal format in files with .sfd extensions.
  Nautilus identifies these files as "text/plain" and wants to open them
  with Gedit or whatever your default text editor is.  I can add
  Fontforge to the "Open With" menu using Nautilus,  but right clicking
  on a file quickly becomes a royal pain when you're using Fontforge
  with any regularity.

  .sfd files are created only by Fontforge and opened only by Fontforge,
  so I think that when Fontforge is installed it should automatically be
  set up such that double-clicking on .sfd files opens them in Fontforge
  by default.

  Since Nautilus identifies .sfd files as "text/plain," if I make
  Fontforge the default, I end up with a situation where double-clicking
  on any "text/plain" files in Nautilus opens them in Fontforge, which
  is also not correct.

  In addition, Fontforge should appear as one of the options (but
  probably not the default) in the "Open with..." menu in Nautilus for
  .ttf (application/x-font-ttf), .otf (application/x-font-otf), .pfb,
  .pfa, and other font format files, since it can open files of those
  types.

  I tried to fix this by fooling around with mime-types, but the
  Nautilus mime-type set-up is byzantine and I haven't been able to find
  very good documentation. Hopefully someone with more experience than I
  can fix this.
