The dpkg output makes it clear that the issue is with the maintainer
script of this “brscan2” package.  I do not see that Ubuntu provides
such a package.

 status invalid

@ill: Report this issue to the provider of the brscan2 package.  It
looks like this is from a scanner manufacturer.

  when attempting to uninstall a package, apt-get fails to remove it. 
  $ sudo apt-get remove brscan2
