[Bug 1011000] Re: Boot loader failed to install for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

I was running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and totally goofed up the Operating
System by trying to install i386 32 bit libraries in order to write code
for Android. In the process of doing this unity was deleted, along with
system settings, and MythTV, and well a whole bunch of software that I
had added. Plus I had totally goofed up a recent upgrade by apt clean
during an upgrade by mistake. So I decided to reload the OS which is on
drive sda. Install on the live CD would not let me install to sda. It
would let me install to sdb, or sdc, but not sda. None of the drives
are raided. Taking out sdc, which has Windows 7 on it, and then live CD
only let me instal to sdb. I had to disconnect every drive but the one
I wanted in order to reload the OS. Small pain but totally not nice.

I hadn't seen anything on the forums suggesting that Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64
bit was uncompatible with Eclipse and Java programming for Android. But
there are a lot of threads out there stating that its safe to load 32
bit libraries on a 64 bit system which didn't make a lot of sense to me.
Obviously I should have listened to myself.

Title:
Boot loader failed to install for Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

Status in “grub-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Building a new system using two used drives that were striped for
raid0 and WinXP. Ubuntu failed to load the boot loader. LiveCD
detected the two partitions on the existing drives and was able to
display the files. Also told install to erase disks and use the whole
partition. Did not configure raid in bios yet.

  AMD FX-6200
  ASUS M5A97
  4GB Ram
  Two Sata HDs 300GB each.

I expected the live CD to install properly on the new system. And
format and configure the hard disks as required.
