Warren, it appears that you have also reported the following bug
reports:

Bug #1029149 - gparted automatically starts scanning all devices slowly and never completing the task
Bug #1056540 - gparted does not finish scanning when in live session USB drive

Is this bug report a duplicate of the first reported instance?

If not, then what is the difference with this bug report?

Title:
  Gparted takes 30 seconds to finish loading

Status in “gparted” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  1) Xubuntu 12.10 AMD 64 daily build 10-8-2012 A
  2) gparted 0.12.1-1
  3) Gparted is expected to finish loading in less than 30 seconds.
  4) Gparted took 30 seconds to finish loading. In the first image searching /dev/sda/partitions this last 8 seconds. The second image 0 operations pending last the remainder until gparted has finished. Notice that the mouse pointer timer is active in the second image which last the remaining 22 seconds for gparted to load.
