Hi I fixed this  by installing   the Ubuntu-Desktop   in the terminal
and the  installation  went ahead  without a hitch  thanks    for all your
effort you guys  you are stars

Bug description:
  The upgrade doesn't complete because it says it can't install ubuntu-desktop.
  Upgrade from  12.04 to  12.10.

  From VarLogDistupgradeAptlog.txt:

  ERROR:root:failed to mark 'ubuntu-desktop' for install (E:Unable to
  correct problems, you have held broken packages.)

  There's lot of other dependency issues in that error log.
