Title:
umount's "device is busy" statement is verbose?
Status in “util-linux” package in Ubuntu:
Expired
Bug description:
Binary package hint: mount
It is not immediately obvious what to do when mount reports that the
"device is busy". Even to more experienced users it can be a bit of a
surprise to get a "device is busy" message when lsof and fuser report
that the filesystem is not in use (see below).
Perhaps "umount" or "umount -v" could give more verbose output, see
e.g. mount-v.sh (attached). An example:
xp at 7.10:/media$ lsof | grep /media/sdb7
xp at 7.10:/media$ sudo umount /media/sdb7 -v
umount: /media/sdb7: device is busy
umount: /media/sdb7: device is busy
#Huh, why is this?
#More verbose output could make the cause clear:
xp at 7.10:~/bin$ sudo ./umount-v.sh /media/sdb7
umount: /media/sdb7: device is busy
umount: /media/sdb7: device is busy
The mountpoint /media/sdb7 is in use by:
/tmp /media/sdb7/debootstrap/dapper/tmp none rw,bind 0 0
/home/xp /media/sdb7/debootstrap/dapper/home/xp none rw,bind 0 0
