  i have upgraded to 12.04.1 and I've recently noticed that update-manager
  no longer prompts to install updates.  Previous to 12.04.1, it was
  mostly popping up every day.
  
  To reproduce, run the cron script and see if update-manager comes up,
  which it won't.
  
  to fix the bug, update-manager should show updates when they are
  available.
