i worked around this bug by creating, in a terminal window, mount points
and mounting 6 of the 9 ntfs, ext4 partitions and a swap partition on my
4 drives, two standard and two ssd. these 6 are other OSes and data
partitions that are not used as system partitions.

i then run
#> swapoff -a. 
i leave 2 ext4 and the 1 swap not mounted and these are my target partitions for the install.

after the preparing to install runs (YAY) and a dialog asks if i want it
to unmount the mounted partitions, i select no or cancel or whatever the
do not unmount option is. it tells me that the resize functionality will
not work, but i have done all that before hand.

then the partitioner is launched and i manually umount all drives i
manually mounted in the terminal window that i used to create them in
and enter the new mount points into the partitioner. i don't think the
mount points matter what they are called or where i mount them as long
as the partitions that i am not going to install to are mounted. i've
only done this on my one machine.

  Raring desktop i386 20121119 installation hangs on dell inspiron, with
  ubuntu partman:   No matching physical volumes found error message on
  the syslog.

  Test steps:
  1. Boot the machine with usb
  2. Enter the wireless password to enable the wifi connection
  3. Wait to hear the drums  and select 'Install Ubuntu' with English being the language selection
  4. Click 'Continue' with the default selections on the 'Preparing  to install ubuntu' screen( where it shows the power, available disk space and internet connectivity statu)
  5. The installation does not proceed from this point
