UPDATE:
Running this in a terminal window:

      sudo rm /var/lib/dpkg/info/libxml-libxml-perl.prerm


allowed the Ubuntu Software Centre to perform the Repair (mentioned above) successfully.

  1.  Upgrade from Ubuntu 11.10 to Ubuntu 12.04 LTS
  2.  During upgrade, the following error message was provided and logged:
