Public bug reported:

I'm was having all kinds of trobbles with apt in both my virtual machine
and my bare metal ever since the 12.04.02 updates. Lot's of crashes and
twice my bare mettal randomly stopped booting and was unable to be fixed
by apt-get or any other mean's I am aware of.

This particular chrash is just one of the crashes I get every minute
from anything related to apt like the software center which crashes on
load, the updater that gives random crashes but somtimes remains
running, and apt-get that give errors in similar frequency to Update
Manger.
