Public bug reported:
I am trying to install ubuntu 11.10 over 12.10, because I absolutely
hate the pgm "disks" in 12.10. It won't even format a thumb drive, and
whatever I do in "disks" adversely affects the behavior of my hd, and in
a way that I do not know how to undo. I lost 8 gigs of backup data
using "disks" on a thumb drive. I have never complained before about
ubuntu freeware, but I really do hate "disks". It is apparently for very
advanced users. A time-consuming learning curve is apparently necessary
in order to properly use "disks". I want a basic, intuitive disk
utility that doesn't mess up either your thumb drive or your hd --
something that can do simple things like format a thumb drive without
going to college, and without making the thumb drive unmountable. I am
really pissed with "disks". I have never before had trouble installing
11.10 over anything, but now it doesn't want to install over 12.10,
perhaps because of something "disks" did to my hd? In my frustration
with "disks" I had used an old OS X machine to format my thumb drive,
and had it write a classic Mac boot partition, because I also have a
classic Mac, which I was going to use to format the drive if all else
failed. But after mounting the drive in ubuntu, ubuntu insisted that
the thumb drive should be there at startup. After that, it took me
three days to get "disks" to format the thumb drive, and I don't
remember how I did it, but in the process I made a different thumb drive
-- wirh 8 gigs of backup data -- unmountable.
