A little more info, please. Were you just trying to update your packages
or were you trying to do a distribution upgrade (to the next version of
Ubuntu)?

If you're just trying to update, take a look at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PackageManagerTroubleshootingProcedure
Run the commands in Step 5 and give us the output from each (unless it fixes your problem).
