Hello Brian.
maybe you are true but it's strange... On this PC I was able to install 
Mint 15, Ubuntu Desktop & Server 13.10, FreeBSD 9.1...
the HD is an SSD Sandisk Extreme... nothing strange.
no media preparation... all absolutely standard.
I'm a SW developer and I Install dozen of OS on VMs (VBox and Vmware) 
and physical hard drives per year for testing.
no strange data or weird operations.

I've try two times from USB and DVD source.
after ubuntu-gnome, Mint has been installed perfeclty.

it's odd.
