Title:
update of mount hanged, making system unbootable

Status in “util-linux” package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: mount

I just updated packages in a 10.10 installation. There was a new mount
package, which installation hanged. After some minutes I retried and
the same happened. I rebooted the machine.

The system went to recovery mode, only root fs mounted and I was able
to see that there was empty file /bin/mount and the mount command was
in file /bin/mount.dpkg-tmp but it's permissions were none. So, I am
not able to run even that because nothing can be changed in ro file
system - and there is no mount command to change that.

Sorry to report this in bit hurry and without too much details, but my
computer is - unbootable - and if this problem is common, there will
  be many others tomorrow.
