Nevermind the image I tested has a session setup problem. 13.10 release
and trusty daily do not have the issue.

Title:
ubiquity-dm doesn't have access to /dev/dri because of missing
  loginctl session

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
as apparently ubiquity-dm does not have a proper loginctl session set
up it does not have access to /dev/dri.

generally speaking this means that a ubiquity UI couldn't do fancy
opengl nonesense. which may indeed happen at some point if either
ubuntu or kubuntu switches the UI to QML2/Qt5.

more specifically and in the right now: in case of kubuntu the permission issue makes KWin's GL support detection code fall back to llvmpipe which then makes KWin force Xrender effects rendering rather than OpenGL. this setting is written to a config file so kwin doesn't need to check again.
if the user then chooses to 'Try Kubuntu' the newly started session actually has access to /dev/dri but will still use xrender as per previous detection.

without a proper session every !ubiquity piece of softwared used runs
risk of having reduced feature availability.
