Public bug reported:

ubuntu used to run like a charm on this machine till ~13.10 came out.

have not been able to complete a full install from scratch after many
attemps (including 12.04, 12.10, server edition, etc.)

failures appear to be random - sometimes a text screeen, sometimes a
machine hang, sometimes a reboot - at different phases of the install

changed video card from nVidia GT220 back to original ATI 3450HD and
this is the furthest i have got (second try; first try failed with a
text screen about a NULL pointer dereference
