Hmm, perhaps that's the issue? I'll admit I don't know too much about
automatic codec install because I do it manually as in previous comment.
If you feel gstreamer1.0 would be a better package for this bug, feel
free to change it.

I tried to open a MP3 file with Totem.
I had no MP3 codec installed so It searched for codecs (as expected).
But then to my surprise it found no codecs to install.
