Max, thanks for this suggestion, but we aren't going to do this. To
address your use cases in order:

* There is no longer an "updates available" icon to right-click.
* If you want to update at a time of your choosing, you can choose "Remind Me Later", or even minimize the window.
* The dialog (together with its Launcher icon) *are* the visual cue that updates are available. An icon in the menu bar alone wasn't noticable enough.
* Sometimes, where Ubuntu changes its UI for something, it offers the old UI as a option. But we're under no obligation to do so, because it isn't sustainable for each release to provide the accumulated aggregate of all options Ubuntu has ever offered. In this case, offering the old UI now would involve reimplementing the old behavior in the indicator system, and that work is not worth doing nor maintaining.

We do have settings for making auto-launch much less frequent. If you
install security updates automatically, the prompt about other updates
can appear as infrequently as once every two weeks.

** Changed in: update-notifier (Ubuntu)
       Status: Triaged => Invalid

Title:
There should be a UI to switch auto_launch off

Status in “update-notifier” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: update-notifier

There should be a friendly UI to disable auto-launch. (I know there's
gconf-editor - that's a scary UI to anyone not already familiar with
  gconf).

  Use cases:
   * User wants to use one of the other options offered from the right-click menu of the "updates available" icon, not the default.

   * User wants to update at a time of their choosing, and doesn't want
an open window hanging around from when updates are detected until
  they are ready to upgrade.

   * User wants a visual cue that updates are available, but will
actually install the updates using, e.g. aptitude.

   * User is simply accustomed to the update style of previous Ubuntu
releases and does not appreciate being forced to change (or discover
  gconf).
