  New Ubuntu install on a toshiba laptop not working

Status in “installation-guide” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  After typing the password the screen goes to a screen with a
  background but NOTHING else. The pointer moves. This is the first time
  starting a new Ubuntu install. I don't have any Linux experience and I
  am not impressed yet. I really want to get this machine running.  This
  is the desktop version 12 that I downloaded Tuesday.
