Public bug reported:

I have received this error twice when attempting to upgrade from 12.04
to 12.10. When I used the command listed below, the report showed I was
on 11.10. I installed 12.04 from a disk and never installed 11.10. To
the best of my knowledge, this isn't a pre-release version of Linux
12.04, nor have I installed the 12.10 pre-release version. I do have
some Windows software on my computer, but no unofficial Linux Software.

Could not calculate the upgrade

An unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade:
E:Unable to correct problems, you have held broken packages.

 This can be caused by:
 * Upgrading to a pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Running the current pre-release version of Ubuntu
 * Unofficial software packages not provided by Ubuntu

If none of this applies, then please report this bug using the command
'ubuntu-bug ubuntu-release-upgrader-core' in a terminal.
