This actually isn't a duplicate. This error is because you tried to
install grub to a partition instead of the MBR. This requires the use
of block lists, which is prone to breakage on most filesystems, and
outright impossible when /boot is on btrfs. You need to install grub to
the MBR instead.
** This bug is no longer a duplicate of bug 1059827
Non trival grub2 installs no longer fit in small embed areas
** Changed in: grub-installer (Ubuntu)
Status: New => Invalid

Title:
grub-installer failed to install grub in ubiquity installer
Status in “grub-installer” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
When trying to install grub to Ext4,3,2 and Btrfs, the installer
showed "Executing 'grub-install /dev/sda' failed. This is a fatal
error.". Installing to a dedicated Ext2 /boot partition fails. I
didn't have this problem for 12.04 but I have it in all ubuntu
12.04.1 based installations.
