Further back we can see that it is an issue with the installation of a
package that was downloaded:

Jan 4 02:54:56 ubuntu ubiquity: Preparing to replace thunderbird 16.0.1+build1-0ubuntu1 (using .../thunderbird_17.0+build2-0ubuntu0.12.10.1_i386.deb) ...

Jan 4 02:54:59 ubuntu ubiquity: dpkg-deb (subprocess): decompressing archive member: internal gzip read error: '<fd:4>: incorrect data check'
Jan 4 02:54:59 ubuntu ubiquity: dpkg-deb: error: subprocess <decompress> returned error exit status 2
Jan 4 02:54:59 ubuntu ubiquity: dpkg: error processing /target/var/cache/apt/archives/thunderbird_17.0+build2-0ubuntu0.12.10.1_i386.deb (--unpack):
Jan 4 02:54:59 ubuntu ubiquity: subprocess dpkg-deb --fsys-tarfile returned error exit status 2
Jan 4 02:55:00 ubuntu ubiquity: No apport report written because the error message indicates an issue on the local system
Jan  4 02:55:00 ubuntu ubiquity:

I try installing again as it may be a temporary issue. If that doesn't
work then try installing without downloading updates and then update
your system after the installation process.
