Somewhere in /etc/apt/sources.list or /etc/apt/sources.list.d/ you have
a reference to karmic-backports, and as karmic is no longer supported
the files listed in the description can not be found.  You'll need to
find and remove these references.

  Trying to update to Kubuntu 12.10 and get error message

Status in “ubuntu-release-upgrader” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
   I can't upgrade to 12.10. I get the error message below at 94% of the
  way through the  "Setting new software channels" stage.

  I have a good network connection and can can connect to all other
  websites that I have tested without problem.

  Error message:
  W:Failed to fetch http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic-backports/main/source/Sources  404  Not Found
  , W:Failed to fetch http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic-backports/restricted/source/Sources  404  Not Found
  , W:Failed to fetch http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic-backports/universe/source/Sources  404  Not Found
  , W:Failed to fetch http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/karmic-backports/multiverse/source/Sources  404  Not Found
  , E:Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones used instead.
