A MacBookPro 2011.
I installed from USB external cd Ubuntu Server 12.10 and then tried to
update via apt-get install ubuntu-server.
>From the live CD I too got through to the drum roll, but nothing
displayed.
Looks like there are two problems one in USB driver the other in EFI
stuff (I installed rEFIt first).
I hope this gives some information to a problem which is being
experienced by a few people.
(my optical drive has been swapped for an SSD, hence external USB)

Title:
Ubuntu 11.10 Daily Build (2011-07-26) won't boot (alternate amd64+mac)
on a newer MacBook Pro
Status in “syslinux” package in Ubuntu:
Confirmed
Bug description:
The summary says it all. I insert the disc into my MacBook Pro,
reboot, hold down the C key. It loads up the ISO loader screen. I
select "Install Ubuntu", the screen goes black and remains that way.
Please let me know if there is any more information I can give.
Brandon
