Title:
udisk update removed gnome panels from desktop
Status in “udisks” package in Ubuntu:
Expired
Bug description:
Binary package hint: udisks
Two week ago I installed Ubuntu 10.04 on my old eMachine T1221. When
the installation was complete, I installed all of the Security and
Recommended Updates that the Update Manager listed. Outside of some
minor irritations concerning the Intel video section, things went
without major incident. A couple of days ago, I decided to make some
changes to the configuration, so I started out with do a fresh install
of 10.04. Again, when the install was complete, I installed all the
updates listed by the Update Manager, something on the order of 257 in
total. When I rebooted, the boot sequence was noticeably slower.
When the desktop did finally appear, neither of the top or bottom
panels ever appeared.
I research the net a bit and found that I could right click on the
desktop, choose to Change Desktop Background, from which I could
change the Theme to one of the High Contrast options. This resulted
in the gnome panels appearing in a somewhat bloated form. But, at
least that allowed me to use "Applications" to get to the Terminal.
From there, simply using
sudo gnome-panel
would force the panels into a more normal configuration. However,
with any fresh boot or reboot, the panels would again disappear.
As this was no really a solution, I did a another fresh install of
10.04. Again, the Update Manager advised of 257 updates to be
installed. I then laboriously when through the process of de-
selecting all but the single top update, installing just one update at
a time. It should would help if the Update Manager had a (Clear All)
option available.
Any way, after several hours and literally over 200 reboots, I did not
encounter the problem again until I installed the udisks update listed
tin the Recommended Updates list. Immediately after installing it, a
reboot resulted in a Desktop with no panels.
At this point, I did yet another fresh install of 10.04. Upon
completion, I used the Update Manager to install all BUT the udisks
update. I have repeatedly shut down and rebooted with everything
acting normally.
Clearly, the problem is occurring with this udisks update.
