[Bug 202009] Re: update-grub not updating menu.lst

I got my system unbootable after deleting some "old" kernels, then spent
about an hour recovering the system, debugging and trying to figure out
why update-grub is not doing what is saying it's doing.

I'm using latest Ubuntu, of course.

There should at least be an HUGE warning when one runs update-grub
saying "I am doing nothing because of an unsolved ingenuous bug from
2008".

Title:
  update-grub not updating menu.lst

Status in “grub” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grub

Up to date hardy with grub 0.97-29ubuntu18 in a kvm virtual machine. Running 'update-grub' results in:
  $ sudo update-grub
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub
Searching for default file ... found: /boot/grub/default
Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst
Searching for splash image ... none found, skipping ...
  Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-12-386
  Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-11-386
  Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-7-386
  Found kernel: /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.24-5-386
  Found kernel: /boot/memtest86+.bin
  Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done

But menu.lst is not updated (though the timestamp is). It hasn't
  updated since the vmlinuz-2.6.24-7-386 kernel.

I found this entirely odd, so I made sure to do an fsck and tried
  again before submitting.
