I also saw this in the 13.10 installer (Lubuntu 64 Saucy) with a Lenovo
S205 Netbook.

This machine has a BIOS that simply ignores the disk (with no error
message) unless all of the following are true:

* The bootable flag must be set on at least one partition.
* It must have a MBR rather than GPT.
* It must have grub-0.97, rather than grub-pc or grub-efi
* Only certain brands of SSDs are compatible; some don't work.

Anyway, this lack of boot flag is easy to fix when noticed, but most
people won't spot it. Can I suggest that the installer should always set
the boot flag.

Title:
No boot flag on any partition - Failure to boot after install - Acer
  Aspire 5720

Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
After a fresh install of Xubuntu 12.04 onto an Acer Aspire 5720, using a usb flash drive as installation media,
the PC failed to boot with the message: "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key".

If the installation media was inserted during boot however, Xubuntu
  booted fine.

Turns out the boot flag was missing in the primary partition.
The problem was fixed by setting the boot flag manually through gparted.
