Official support for Ubuntu 9.04 "Jaunty Jackalope", Ubuntu 9.10 "Karmic
Koala" and the desktop edition of Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx" has ended.
If this problem is still occurring on Ubuntu 13.04 "Raring Ringtail"
please file a new bug report so that we can get a fresh set of system
logs and system info.

Title:
[jaunty] Videos found with Totem's Youtube plugin don't play - codec
not found
Status in “gnome-codec-install” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
I'm using today's (April 18th) current daily
ubuntu at ubuntu:~$ lsb_release -rd
Description: Ubuntu 9.04
Release: 9.04
##My Actions##
Boot from a (non-persistent) USB stick created with today's daily CD
Open Totem
Select YouTube from the dropdown
Search for "kitties" (or anything else, but what else could you want?)
Double-click on the first result (aww...isn't the kitty cute?)
"Search for suitable plugin?" dialogue appears.[1]
Press "Search"
[1]: Full text of "Search for suitable plugin?" dialogue:
The required software to play this file is not installed. You need to
install suitable plugins to play media files. Do you want to search
for a plugin that supports the selected file?
The search will also include software which is not officially
supported.
##Expected result##
Find the required plugins, list them and prompt me to install them.
Warn me about potential legal issues and if I am accessing previously
disabled repositories. After I confirm, install the plugins, then
return to totem and play the video.
##Actual result##
An error dialogue:
No packages with the requested plugins found
The requested plugins are:
H.264 decoder
MPEG-4 AAC decoder
Press OK. Another error dialogue appears:
An error occurred
The playback of this movie requires the following decoders which are
not installed:
H.264 decoder
MPEG-4 AAC decoder
Double clicking on the video again (or other videos) doesn't search
for plugins again, it just brings up the "An error has occured"
dialogue.
##Solution##
After enabling community maintained software through the Add/Remove
Programs or Software Sources dialogues and restarting Totem, the same
"Search for suitable plugin?" dialogue is displayed, but the search
successfully finds the gstreamer0.10-ffmpeg and gstreamer0.10-plugins-
bad packages. After selecting install, the "Confirm installation of
restricted software" dialogue is displayed, then installation
proceeds. After this, the videos play.
Despite saying that "The search will also include software which is
not officially supported." it appears that this does not in fact occur
if the relevant repositories are disabled. This should be fixed.
Please let me know if any further info is required.
