** Summary changed:
- Open/save file dialog places wrong
+ pkexec needs ability to retain user HOME and possibly other environment
** Description changed:
- Binary package hint: gnome
-
- Ubuntu 8.04 alpha 4 i386 desktop CD
-
- In gparted, after performing an operation, I clicked "save Details" in the "Applying pending operations" dialog.
- The "Save Details" file dialog offered "root" and the filesystems in the Places list on the left.
- No "Desktop", "Documents" and such.
-
- I saved the (HTML) file to "root".
-
- Then I wanted to open this file in Firefox, by selecting menu "File / Open file..." in firefox. Its "Open File" dialog had the following items in "Places" :
- Search
- Recently Used
- Desktop
- rofs
- cdrom
- (the filesystems: disk partitions and one USB key)
- Documents
- Music
- Pictures
- Videos
-
- No "root". Not even under "Recently Used". Or any other item. (I did not try Search).
- I simply could not find the file I saved 1 minute ago.
+ Launching gui applications with pkexec strips their environment bare and
+ points the home directory to /root, causing the gnome file dialog to
+ behave badly. It needs a way to preserve the user home the way sudo and
+ gksu do.
** Also affects: policykit-1 (Ubuntu)
Importance: Undecided
Status: New
** Changed in: gparted (Ubuntu)
Status: New => Invalid
