I have tried running the script and recieved the following error:

sam at malcolm:~$ sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*
rm: cannot remove `/var/lib/apt/lists/partial': Is a directory

Status in “update-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  I have opened package manager and recieve the following error:

  Could not initialise the package information

  An unresolvable problem occurred while initialising the package
  information.

  Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and
  include the following error message:

  'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with
  MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/security.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise-
  security_main_i18n_Translation-en, E:The package lists or status file
  could not be parsed or opened.'
