You appear to be installing Ubuntu to /dev/sdb, but trying to install
grub on /dev/sda, which has no partitions.  If you really want to boot
from that drive, you will need to create a partition on it, otherwise
you should just install grub on /dev/sdb with the rest of the system and
make sure your bios is set to boot from that drive.

Status in “grub-installer” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  While completing installation of Ubuntu 12.10 the installation crashed
  with a fatal error (installers terminology) concerning the grub file,
  the application collected the  attached info (see above). Sorry to be
  so vague. I have tried to install this package  three times onto this
  drive, having already installed it successfullt on a further two
  drives on the computer. Thanks Rich
