Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gcc-4.4

  Hi

  The implementation of indirect function calls in gcc is under-optimal;
  not only can it be written with a better choice of assembly, the
  current implementation skews branch prediction which degrades
  performance too.

  We might be able to backport this patch from trunk in lucid if time
  permits.
