Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.
We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures
At a minimum, we need:
1. the specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the problem,
2. the behavior you expected, and
3. the behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

Title:
grub fails to install on dell optiplex 320
Status in “grub” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
(might be closely related to #138305)
* environment:
* dell optiplex 320 desktop
* ubuntu 7.10 (problem present with both live and alternate cd, apparently present in previous versions too)
* needs option "hpet=disable" to boot
* suggested diagnostics information from https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeamBugPolicies to follow (no access to the machines right now)
* problem: grub fails to install
Please tell me what more information you would like me to provide. I
want this bug squashed. Badly.
P.S. I've temporarily worked around these issues by:
* booting from the alternate cd
* using the hpet=disable option
* installing ubuntu, trying but failing to install lilo in the process
* rebooting the alternate cd in rescue mode
* chrooting into the installed but unbootable ubuntu setup
* running liloconfig and lilo
* rebooting into the installed (and now bootable! woohoo!) ubuntu system
