I'm assuming this bug has long since been resolved (one way or the
other).  I don't remember there being such issues for hardy->lucid
upgrades.  Were you able to get past this problem at some point?

  Problem on upgrade from Hardy

Status in “sysvinit” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: upstart

  When I tried upgrade from Hardy into Karmic Alpha 6 I got error
  "Couldn't configure pre-depend sysvinit-utils for upstart, probably a
  dependency cycle." and I don't found any solution. Removing of package
  sysvinit-utils don't help.

  sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
  E: Internal Error, Could not perform immediate configuration (2) on sysvinit-utils

  sudo apt-get install  sysvinit-utils
