It looks like you tried to install grub on sda, which looks like a GPT
partitioned disk holding Windows.  You either need to install grub to
sdb, where you installed Ubuntu, and configure your bios to boot from
that drive, or if you want to install grub to sda, you have to create a
1MB bios_grub partition.

  Installer works up to grub step then repeatedly states that grub
  cannot be isntalled to selected device(s). I installed it on a freshly
  formatted drive separate from windows.
