Title:
user of singleboot machine is not informed of grub2's existence

Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: grub2

I recently experienced a problem which made it impossible for me to
log in to my laptop via gdm. However, I had no idea how to access
Recovery Mode, because grub2 does not make the user of a singleboot
(Ubuntu only) machine of its existence. Fortunately, I had access to
another computer connected to the 'net - but without that access, I
would have been left with a completely non-functioning laptop! Clearly
  this isn't satisfactory.

Also, several people told me to press ESC to access the grub menu,
when (I eventually found out) it's actually SHIFT under grub2. A
simple flashed up message saying "Press SHIFT for Grub / Recovery
Mode" would be useful, I think.
