Title:
Ubuntu installer and Intel RAID - Always fails to install GRUB

Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
Intel Rapid Storage Technology RAID-0 array on MSI GX660R
  Ubuntu 11.10

When I select for Ubuntu to be installed to the RAID array and GRUB to
be installed to /dev/mapper/(root of the RAID array) which is the
first option on the list, everything goes well up to the grub-install
stage where I get an error saying "Failed to install GRUB to
/dev/sda". There is no /dev/sda, so GRUB should not try to put itself
there. On the next menu, if you tell it the correct place to install,
it just produces another error (though this time with the correct
place name) and the installer quits, giving the "Installation is
complete. You need to res..." message. However, the disk light still
goes and the loading mouse icon is still there, so I imagine the
installer is doing something despite appearing to quit.

GRUB can be installed manually from the Live CD but it's a pain and
  it's difficult for many users.
