Gutsy reached end of life some time ago. Are you able to reproduce this
on 12.04 or higher?
** Changed in: ubiquity (Ubuntu)

Title:
gutsy install stops after formatting partitions
Status in “ubiquity” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
Binary package hint: ubiquity
Ubuntu 7.10 beta, ubiquity 1.5.18
While running the installer, after custom partitioning 5%
through "Installing System" the installer stops working (without a
crash - just no activity). The Live-CD system is still usable (I write
this on the system). The kern.log ends with these three
lines:
Sep 30 21:25:39 ubuntu kernel: [ 3643.416000] __open_file: branch 0
lower_mnt_idx NULL! Set to df8f7a00
Sep 30 21:25:39 ubuntu kernel: [ 3643.416000] __open_file: opened
f4eec110, string.pyc
Sep 30 21:25:39 ubuntu kernel: [ 3643.416000] __open_file: branches
bstart 0, bend 0
but I don't if that is relevant. Other potentially interesting
information: /var/log/installer/debug report version 1.5.18 and
otherwise only complains about the locale failing to fall back to "C"
from "sv_SE.UTF-8" due to missing files.
The install CD is OK (I checked the media before trying to install).
Some work has been done to the new partitions:
ubuntu at ubuntu:/var/log$ df -h

I retried using ubiquity --debug with the same result.
