[Bug 1173320] Re: No progress indicator or other message during hard disk drive partition check

After another partition check without progress indicator (yesterday, up-
to-date system) and my experiences from bug #1170421, I did some testing
with the xubuntu logo theme.

With the xubuntu logo theme, the usual progress indicator actually *is*
displayed:

  Laufwerke werden auf Fehler überprüft. Dies kann einige Minuten dauern

  »C« drücken, um alle laufenden Überprüfungen abzubrechen
  Routine disk drive check

So this seems to be a problem with the kubuntu logo theme.

Please see bug #1170421 for some testing of text display with several
plymouth themes on a second laptop (Samsung R55). Both on the NC10 (this
laptop) and the R55, the "Remove media" message on live system shutdown
was (at that time at least) not displayed - I assume these two cases of
missing text are occuring due to the same underlying bug. If that's the
case (and the testing method in bug #1170421 is correct), the missing
progress indicator could also affect several other themes (edubuntu,
lubuntu, ubuntu).

Package versions:

plymouth-theme-kubuntu-logo: 1:13.04ubuntu13
plymouth-theme-xubuntu-logo: 13.04.4
plymouth-label: 0.8.8-0ubuntu6.1
plymouth: 0.8.8-0ubuntu6.1

Steps to reproduce (apart from the first, unplanned reboot):

$ sudo apt-get install plymouth-theme-xubuntu-logo

$ sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth
# "update-alternatives: /lib/plymouth/themes/xubuntu-logo/xubuntu-logo.plymouth
# wird verwendet, um /lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth (default.plymouth) im
# manueller Modus bereitzustellen"
$ sudo touch /forcefsck

# reboot - forgot update-initramfs, therefore: kubuntu logo displayed,
no checking progress indicator displayed

$ sudo update-initramfs -u
$ sudo touch /forcefsck

# reboot - xubuntu logo displayed, checking progress indicator displayed

$ sudo update-alternatives --config default.plymouth
# "update-alternatives: /lib/plymouth/themes/kubuntu-logo/kubuntu-logo.plymouth
# wird verwendet, um /lib/plymouth/themes/default.plymouth (default.plymouth) im
# Auto-Modus bereitzustellen"
$ sudo update-initramfs -u
$ sudo touch /forcefsck

# reboot - kubuntu logo displayed, no checking progress indicator
displayed

Title:
  No progress indicator or other message during hard disk drive
  partition check

Status in “plymouth” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  When a hard disk drive partition is checked, nothing indicates that
  fact. Also, there is no way for the user to know how to cancel the
  check (if that's possible any longer at all) in case he somehow knows
  about the check being in progress - a message like "Press 'C' to
  cancel" used to be displayed in Kubuntu oneiric for example.

  Plymouth theme is plymouth-theme-kubuntu-logo (13.04ubuntu11); plymouth is
  0.8.8-0ubuntu6.1 (Kubuntu raring installed on Samsung NC10).

  This worked in Kubuntu oneiric.

  Maybe this one is related to bug #966480/bug #1170421 (no messages
  displayed)?
