Thank you for reporting this bug to Ubuntu. Ubuntu 8.10 reached EOL on April 30, 2010.

I've tried recreating this bug with Raring (13.04) and was unable to,
given the information you've provided. Please upgrade to the latest
version and re-test. If the bug is still reproducible, increase the
verbosity of the steps to recreate it so we can try again.

  Binary package hint: manpages

  In performing a routine system update for my 8.10 system manpages will
  no longer update.  The summary says it all:  package manpages 2.77-1
  failed to install/upgrade: trying to overwrite
  `/usr/share/man/man7/hostname.7.gz', which is also in package bind.

  dmbrown at sam:/rshare/home/dmbrown$ dpkg -L bind | grep hostname
  /usr/share/man/man7/hostname.7.gz

  Sure enough, it's there.  And for the new manpages:

  dmbrown at sam:/rshare/home/dmbrown$ dpkg --contents /var/cache/apt/archives/manpages_3.01-1_all.deb | grep hostname
  -rw-r--r-- root/root      2152 2008-06-25 09:33 ./usr/share/man/man7/hostname.7.gz

  There it is, too.
