This normally happens after a boot fails for any reason, so something
probably went wrong, and manually choosing the entry and booting
successfully is what fixed it rather than the dpkg-reconfigure. If this
happens again, press C to go to the grub command line and use the set
command to look at the value of the recordfail variable. If it is set
to 1, then that is what happened.

Title:
doesn't boot automatically from the first entry, had to hit enter
Status in “grub2” package in Ubuntu:
Invalid
Bug description:
on my brother's PC, after powerup the grub menu appeared (instead of normally not showing it and booting the first entry).
it wouldn't boot automatically and i had to press enter on the keyboard (unfortunately that meant: plugging a PS2 keyboard in the back of the pc, it didn't detect the USB keyboard).
then i did a "dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc" and the problem is gone.
my brother has been applying updates as they come out. last one was on
march 24th. let me know if you need more info (config files.. logs..).
this is a pretty standard core2duo pc (no UEFI), single hard drive,
nothing fancy.
grub-pc version: 1.99-21ubuntu3
ubuntu version: 12.04 LTS amd64
