I have successfully captured a strace report when I trace the update-
manager from start to finish...

please pay attention to the latter portion where there are a lot of
timeouts in polling of a futex.

and at the end the control is never returned to 2220 the original
process and I have to kill the shell to exit

  When I add this particular repository:  ppa:jon-severinsson/ffmpeg
  update-notifier will hang at the last moment and continues to spin @100% CPU time.

  strace & ltrace both gives no output of the attached process.

  If I remove this repository update-manager will run to finish.  It
  does not affect apt-get update, or synaptic package manager.

  This is on Ubuntu Lucid 10.04 LTS

  with kernel changed to

  Linux  2.6.38-16-generic #67~lucid1-Ubuntu SMP
