This is about a year old, can hardly remember yesterday...
I think the offending code-word was in the header, which means it had to
be included during compilation, thus causing an error.

Title:
libmount 2.20 uses C++ "new" keyword
Status in “util-linux” package in Ubuntu:
Incomplete
Bug description:
libmount uses "new" in one of mnt_diff_tables parameters. This fatally
confuses a compilation when the library is used in C++.
The issue has been fixed upstream in version 2.21
