Just fixed it myself: As it turns out, the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package was pinned to a specific version - though I don't know how that happened, I don't remember doing it. Anyway, I removed the hold, and the problem disappeared.
Please just ignore this bug report.

Bug description:
While trying to upgrade to 13.10, the update app fails, stating that
"an unresolvable problem occurred while calculating the upgrade.
/var/log/dist-upgrade/apt.log shows hundreds of broken packages. Note
that I am using third-party packages, but I have been using the same
packages and PPAs for years, and release upgrades have always worked.
