[Bug 1243689] [NEW] package 'update-manager'

Public bug reported:

When i try to check for software updates / try to open Ubuntu Software
Centre the error message is as follows:-

An unresolvable problem occurred while initializing the package
information.

Please report this bug against the 'update-manager' package and include
the following error message:

'E:Encountered a section with no Package: header, E:Problem with
MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/in.archive.ubuntu
.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_multiverse_binary-i386_Packages, E:The package
lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.'


Other Info:-
1. lsb_release -rd
Description:	Ubuntu 12.04.3 LTS
Release:	12.04
2.  apt-cache policy pkgname   
E: Encountered a section with no Package: header
E: Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/in.archive.ubuntu.com_ubuntu_dists_precise_multiverse_binary-i386_Packages
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.
3. checking for updates
4. instead receiving error messages as reported above.
